Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: \u2018He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.\u2019 Now I have told you.\u201d<br \/> 8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. \u201cGreetings,\u201d he said. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2840\/33978938015_6987d9e021_c.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 33978938015_6987d9e021_c.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>A NEW CREED<\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>We are not alone,<br \/>     we live in God\u2019s world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>We believe in God:<br \/>     who has created and is creating,<br \/>     who has come in Jesus,<br \/>        the Word made flesh,<br \/>        to reconcile and make new,<br \/>     who works in us and others<br \/>        by the Spirit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>We trust in God.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>We are called to be the Church:<br \/>     to celebrate God\u2019s presence,<br \/>     to live with respect in Creation,<br \/>     to love and serve others,<br \/>     to seek justice and resist evil,<br \/>     to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,<br \/>        our judge and our hope.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>In life, in death, in life beyond death,<br \/>     God is with us.<br \/> We are not alone.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>Thanks be to God.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p>HYMN: In the bulb there is a flower<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/oneking.ca\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/inthebulb.m4a\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n<p><em>In the bulb there is a flower;<br \/>     in the seed, an apple tree;<br \/> in cocoons, a hidden promise:<br \/>     butterflies will soon be free!<br \/> In the cold and snow of winter<br \/>     there&#8217;s a spring that waits to be,<br \/> unrevealed until its season,<br \/>     something God alone can see.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>There&#8217;s a song in every silence,<br \/>     seeking word and melody;<br \/> there&#8217;s a dawn in every darkness,<br \/>     bringing hope to you and me.<br \/> From the past will come the future;<br \/>     what it holds, a mystery,<br \/> unrevealed until its season,<br \/>     something God alone can see.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p><em>In our end is our beginning;<br \/>     in our time, infinity;<br \/> in our doubt there is believing;<br \/>     in our life, eternity.<br \/> In our death, a resurrection;<br \/>     at the last, a victory,<br \/> unrevealed until its season,<br \/>     something God alone can see<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8690\/16815560949_73e1e50aeb_c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>REFLECTION<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Unnatural but not unprecedented.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It seems quite unnatural that we are apart on Easter Sunday.  Giving up church for the end of Lent\u2014if that\u2019s what we did\u2014was strange enough, but missing the Queen of Sundays is hard to bear.  But bear we must, remembering that we have done this before.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>From September to November 1918, the Spanish Flu ravaged our city.  Boards of Health across Canada took the same stringent measures we are experiencing today: churches were closed, along with schools, entertainment venues, public meetings and the like.  And there was push-back.  When one downtown pastor complained about the order to close, he got a rebuke from Toronto\u2019s Medical Officer of Health, who suggested that the minister needed \u201ca truer conception of God\u2019s relationship to man and of man\u2019s humanity to man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mostly, though, churches and fraternal organizations got on with the business of serving others.  An example: at what is now Central Tech, the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire set up a kitchen, sending out 675 quarts of custard, 899 quarts of broth, 147 quarts of lemonade, and 689 quarts of gruel over the course of the outbreak.  If you\u2019re tired of pasta, imagine a diet of custard, broth, lemonade, and gruel.    <\/p>\n\n\n<p>So this is not the first time we\u2019ve closed for an extended period.  And while this may be the first Easter we have missed, we are challenged by a chorus of theologians to remember that every Sunday is a \u201clittle Easter.\u201d  All the Sundays that preceded this time, and all the Sundays that follow this time will be Easters, and we will celebrate the resurrection with the same fervour as we would if we were together today.  Christ is Risen! <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Today we read Matthew\u2019s account of the empty tomb.  It isn\u2019t the shortest (Luke) but isn\u2019t the longest either (John).  The basic outline is the same: the women discover that Jesus has risen, and they become the first messengers to the resurrection.  They receive the essential message (\u201cHe is risen!\u201d) and they pass it on.  <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Yet Matthew gives us an additional gift, by recording part of the emotion of the day.  In the midst of his telling, he shares this: \u201cSo the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.\u201d  Afraid yet filled with joy.  Ponder that for a moment.  It\u2019s hard to hold these two emotions at once, but this is the power of resurrection.  The birth of belief is exciting but fearful.  It inspires awe\u2014not sunset awe\u2014but fear and trembling awe, like standing on holy ground.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>So let\u2019s stay here for a moment: the resurrection is the birth of belief.  First, Jesus is the touchstone of righteous living.  Then, Jesus\u2019 death on the cross defeats the power of death over our lives.  But the resurrection\u2014the empty tomb\u2014is the beginning of belief.  The meaning is not fully-formed (that will come in time) but the women who leave this moment with fear and joy were the first believers, the first to understand that nothing can separate us from God\u2019s love.  Therefore, \u201cneither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.\u201d (Romans 8.38-39)<\/p>\n\n\n<p>This love, manifest in Jesus, and completed at the empty tomb, means that every one of us is a messenger of the resurrection.  To have belief, to embrace the fear and joy of this event, transforms us into Easter people.  It defines us, it animates our fellowship, and connects us to a cloud of witnesses\u2014from those first women down to today.  He is risen!<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It is bittersweet, of course, to talk about fellowship and connection in the time of COVID-19.  It\u2019s hard to feel like a community when we can\u2019t meet.  And to this bittersweet sense, I want to add another layer to our resurrection story: \u201cthe church invisible.\u201d  Remember that chorus of theologians who called every Sunday a little Easter?  They also want us to think about the nature of the church in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>St. Augustine had a first look at the question of the \u2018church invisible,\u2019 complaining that when the Roman empire became Christian it became harder to spot the Christians.  Later, Luther and others made a distinction between the church that needed reforming and the believers that wanted reform: the church invisible.  Last century, Karl Barth took up the topic and said \u201cwe do not believe in the Church; but we do believe that in this congregation the work of the Holy Spirit becomes an event.\u201d**<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In other words, the \u2018church visible\u2019 is the one that is not meeting at this moment, but the \u2018church invisible\u2019 is very much alive.  The Holy Spirit holds us together: united in belief, sustained by love, <em>afraid yet filled with joy<\/em>.  Like the time immediately following the resurrection, we experience longing, separation, fear, and joy.  We feel these emotions all at once, and we take solace in the knowledge that nothing can truly separate us\u2014from each other\u2014or the love of God in Christ Jesus.
